Reflection 8: Visual Principles: Harmony, Contrast, Repetition, Unity

In this week lecture, we learned many visual principles: Harmony, Contrast, Repetition and Unity. I have learned that Unity can be fusion of two things: Harmony and Contrast.

Here is example image about Unity: Vincent Van Gogh, Starry Night.

This picture uses principles of Unity because the art has the continuity in the sky. When looking at the sky: the wind is continuously going from left to right and the yellow wave just above mountain is going pass from left to right. There are no mix-up with the objects in image. The picture is understandable even though it is looks a little chaotic.

In this picture we can see that Harmony is in size and placement. Contrast is in shape.

Here we can see Unity in repetition. I can see the repetition in shape colors and size in this image. And to think that Unity is in many things in images but I just haven't noticed them. When looking at image which has repetition. I can look if it has same shape, size and colors.

In the lecture, we also talk about eye scanning pattern:

I can see why the eye starts scanning from left to right first. In my opinion it is the way we read texts; from left to right. Then it will scan through the image and see whats there. This is very logical way to look at the image but of course all the contrast and other visual elements effects the way we look at the image.

In lecture example we see that we first look at the human face then the text which is easy to read from below:

As we see that human's eyes don't always follow the same pattern to read images. This also differs from individual.
