Holocaust memorial in Berlin
Exercise 0B
Constructive Critique Model – individual
This week’s agenda is to analyse a picture selected
picture from anywhere. Analyse the artwork or design using the Constructive
Criticism Model.
Author: Shahak Shapira
The author has taken a person who has posed at the
memorial place and blended it with a picture of the corpses of the holocaust’s
victims.
Response:
At first, I only looked at the left picture where the
girl was doing an acrobatic move against the wall of memorial stone. I didn’t
think that deeply of the murdered people but then the picture of the right
really visualised that for me. It made me feel anger and think about how
disrespectful and ignorant people are. It also got me feel how selfish people
are. By taking a picture of the known place like this and trying to get as many
likes feels very wrong. It loses the idea of why this place was originally
built.
Seeing the dead people piling up around the girl on
the right picture made me feel sad and disappointed how people don’t understand
the point of this place.
Description:
The left picture is about memorial of about the Holocaust
and has the girl leaning on it doing a handstand. The right picture has the
same girl blended in the scene of killed Jews and other victims. The Holocaust
was a genocide in which about six million European Jews were killed by Adolf
Hitler’s Nazi Germany. There were also non-Jewish victims like Romani, Poles
and many other people.
The left picture is taken from an Instagram application
of a girl. The Instagram picture has 126 likes. The girl took the picture to
show off her skills by doing some hard move and at some cool place. Without
knowing the true meaning of this place, the girl is ignorant. People should not
probably take selfies at the place like this and get to know about the place’s
history.
The right picture the girl is leaning against the wall
next to the door. A lot of dead people around her.
Analysis and
Interpretation:
The author has tried to make people strongly emotional
by putting these two pictures next to each other. To make people think about
the place more than just a touristic place. People should know why this memorial
thing is built in here and read the signs’ descriptions to understand. Many
people want to be popular and they think that taking picture at some famous
place will increase their “followers”. Therefore, the girl in the picture selfishly
took the picture at this place without knowing the meaning of it.
When people look at the picture, they would understand
right away what is wrong with it. It is disrespectful to the memorial place and
to the people who have died. It would feel very wrong to have this kind of
picture for the people who knows about the Holocaust.
Evaluation and
Judgement:
I even have stronger response to this picture when I
looked up for more information of the Holocaust and how many people have died
there. This place should have more respect and understanding. This makes me
think how ignorant some people are and sad because they don’t know anything.
And how people are attracted by media and popularity.
