Reflection 9: The foundations of Typography and Layout

To think that there are so many different things in a character or a text. Also fonts and the way to present text. It's simply amazing. For example this course's IVLE. The way how synopsis is written, white text and black background. I find id quite hard to read white text from the black background but maybe it's the way to present this course. Schedule has many different colors that points at things that are important and I like it that way. There is still a thing that is hard to read in it. A gray background and purple text is really hard to read. It feels like my eyes are jumping between the rows. I guess that is designed that way.

The importance of fonts can be seen in Avant Garde logo which turned into one of the font choices.

As I have edited some videos and actually downloaded some fonts from internet, I just wanted something that looked nice and cool. As in the lecture, the importance of fonts was pointed out in brands, logos and important highlighting in news or magazines.

My favorite fonts or the fonts that I usually use are: Birth of a Hero and Verdana

One thing that I remember from my childhood is the logo of Batman:

As you can see, the text is inside Batman's cape and looks very clearly as yellow from the black background. And you can also see that it's Batman's cape because of the head of Batman. I can see clearly and remember well of this logo even though it has about ten years since I last watched the show or read the comics.

Reading from screen versus book or newspaper

It came to my mind that why reading news from newspaper is easier than reading from computer screen. When reading a lot from screen, some people need a break after a short while and I did some research about this and found at two reasons:

  • intense use of the eyes (often for extended periods of time)
  • looking into screens that are sources of light and are prone to glare and reflections
I would also include reading from screen in dark because of the blue light which tires eyes. Also someone mentioned that screen's light is not natural which also tires eyes.
